We want to bring hope to people who have been impacted by this pandemic in Costa Rica. We have been able to provide food for families during this time, but we discovered that the more significant need in the community is education.
Public schools are closed! The government has indicated the students will not return to regular in-class instruction for all of the 2021 school year. Teachers are sending assignments by email and using Zoom to try and teach the students. Due to economic constraints, many children have dropped out of school this year and may not go back.
According to reports, out of 1,067,091 students from public schools, 91,000 dropped out during the pandemic. These students did not connect to their virtual classes, answer the phone, or complete any of their assignments. Students typically drop out due to the lack of access to technology, the Internet, or the lack of support from the children's families.
One of the pillars of FTC is education. We believe education promotes change in the quality of life for every person in the community and can transform future generations. Education opens the door for new possibilities for those who currently have an uncertain future.
Our Plan
In the first stage, our goal is to have 15 computers to serve 30 students (One group in the mornings and one group in the afternoon). We are currently talking to churches in other communities to work with them, but our first learning center will be in Tiribi.
Our Strategy
At first, we will be working with kids from elementary school. The kids will come to our clubhouse two times per week, where they will have a safe place to do their homework. They will have all the supplies they need and a snack for the day. We are partnering with the public school near Tiribi, which has an enrollment of 300 children. Our goal, at first, is to help 10% of the students.
